33rd Annual McDonald Lecture: The Free Speech Recession: And How to End It

For more than a decade freedom of expression has been in global decline. This trend has even afflicted liberal democracies who – faced by the challenges of the digital age and resurgent populism – frequently view free expression as a threat more than a foundation for democracy. In this year's McDonald lecture, Jacob Mchangama explores why and how we ́re living through a free speech recession at a point in time where the potential for unmediated communication across borders has never been greater.
